Every office needs a mascot, and Cody is OC’s. Cody, canine-child of OC’s Bridget Cavanaugh, is a 10-month-old boxer who hangs out at the office a few times a week. Despite the semi-studded Harley-Davidson collar and somewhat brutish stare, Cody is about as sweet and mellow as they come.

Having pets in the workplace is hardly a new trend, as noted by a 1999 New York Times article. Some Bozeman and Livingston area companies, like Printing For Less and Mystery Ranch, encourage well-behaved animals to accompany their working humans. Furry beasts have been shown to have all kinds of positive influences such as improving health, decreasing stress levels and even making owners more attractive to the opposite sex. OK, that last one isn’t proven, but you can’t deny a cute dog provides better conversation fodder than the old “What’s your sign?” opener.

Livingston resident Joe Josephson has a different take on pets at work. Joe, founder and publisher of First Ascent Press that puts out climbing and other guidebooks, works from home so felines Hunter and Pika are constant companions while he’s on or off the clock. Joe has been interested in blogging for a while and used the cats to ease into the medium with his Kooky Cat Guy blog. Does that count as animal exploitation? Maybe, but the pictures are so cute that I say go for it. Check out the hilarious animated clip he posted that will speak to anyone who’s ever slept with a cat in the bed.
